Carrier Chillers in Running for Coolest Thing Made in NC Competition

Charlotte, Nc. -

Carrier's award-winning AquaEdge® centrifugal chillers are among 145 nominees in a competition aimed at finding the “Coolest” product made in North Carolina. Carrier is a part of Carrier Global Corporation (NYSE: CARR), global leader in intelligent climate and energy solutions.

The Coolest Thing Made in NC competition is in its fifth year. The NC Chamber runs the popular contest, which spotlights North Carolina’s impressive, technologically driven manufacturing industry. According to the NC Chamber and National Association of Manufacturers, manufacturing generates more than 17% of the gross state product and employes more than 10% of the state’s workforce.

Online voting is currently open at coolestthingmadeinnc.com. Anyone with a valid email address may vote once per day. The field of candidates will narrow with each round of voting, with the winning products being announced on Thursday, October 3, the day before National Manufacturing Day.

“Carrier has often been considered synonymous with the cooling industry since Willis Carrier founded modern air conditioning,” said Steve Ribaudo, Vice President and General Manager of Commercial HVAC Americas, Carrier. “And as we celebrate our 25th year building chillers in North Carolina, it’s more than fitting that they be in the running for Coolest Thing Made in NC. Carrier is proud to be part of North Carolina’s manufacturing industry and proud of the work our employees do each day at Carrier’s Charlotte factory.”

The Coolest Thing Made in NC competition recognizes two winners each year: one for businesses with fewer than 100 employees, and one for businesses with 100+ employees.

“As we say at the NC Chamber: what’s made in North Carolina makes North Carolina,” said NC Chamber President and CEO Gary J. Salamido. “We launched the Coolest Thing Made in NC statewide competition in 2020 to celebrate North Carolina’s innovative manufacturing community and champion the next generation of manufacturers and creators. We want to continue elevating the visibility of this vital industry and raise awareness about the limitless potential of modern manufacturing careers. This annual contest is an effective and fun way to do just that.”

Willis Carrier unveiled his arguably most influential innovation, the centrifugal refrigeration machine, or chiller, in May 1922. The invention of the chiller not only helped change where we live, but how we live, work and play.

It helps allow us to live in climates once thought too hot. The invention of the centrifugal chiller played an important role in the population migration in the US from north to south, to large cities in the Middle East and South Asia. Modern hospitals, high rise office and apartment buildings are possible due, in part, to this invention. It also dramatically helped improve manufacturing capabilities, becoming a significant part of numerous modern world industries, including pharmaceuticals, chemicals, electronics, semiconductor production, and data centers.

The centrifugal chillers produced in Carrier’s Charlotte factory include the 19DV, 19MV and 19XR, which are shipped around the world and can be found in almost everything, from airports and schools to skyscrapers and sports venues.
