New Carrier Coolant Distribution Unit Expands Data Center Solutions

Charlotte, N.C. -

The new Carrier Coolant Distribution Unit, part of the growing QuantumLeap™ portfolio of purpose-built data center solutions that extends from chip to chiller, is now available. Carrier is a part of Carrier Global Corporation (NYSE: CARR), global leader in intelligent climate and energy solutions.

The CDU product family includes multiple unit sizes in the range of 1.3 to 5MW, catering to a variety of large-scale liquid cooling deployments. With fewer mechanical and electrical components for equivalent cooling capacity, the Carrier CDU aims to maximize uptime, simplify maintenance, and reduce installation complexity. The design enables efficient chip-level cooling, improved chiller performance, and low pressure drops, reducing PUEs for data center operators and maximizing operating range.

With the rise of high-density heat loads in the data center, direct-to-chip liquid cooling has become an integral part of cooling infrastructure, and the Carrier CDU bridges between the IT equipment to other cooling products within the QuantumLeap product portfolio.

By implementing Carrier’s advanced thermal management technologies, data center operators can achieve up to a 50% reduction in non-IT energy use when compared to legacy cooling technologies — streamlining power usage and lessening grid requirements.

The Carrier CDU seamlessly integrates with other Carrier QuantumLeap solutions, including Automated Logic building controls, Nlyte® data center infrastructure management software, Carrier custom air handling systems, and Carrier’s range of next-generation chiller solutions, including screw and centrifugal compression systems with magnetic bearing technology.

The Carrier Coolant Distribution Unit (CDU) features modular heat exchangers that can achieve approach temperatures as low as 3.6°F (2°C)—a reduction from the industry’s more common 7.2°F (4°C). This innovative design can achieve up to 15% chiller energy savings*, providing flexibility for data center operators to devote more energy to servers, rather than the equipment that helps keep them cool.

The Carrier CDU can be applied in-row, or in mechanical galleries, making it optimal for large-scale data centers, such as hyperscaler and colocation facilities., Three-side access and a shallow cabinet allows for easier service in compact corridors. Models offer configurability to best suit application needs, with a wide variety of electrical arrangements, optional mechanical redundancy, and configurable controls to ensure precise coolant flow to and from IT racks. The Carrier SmartVu™ display provides optimized controls that enable streamlined grouping setup and pairs intuitively with Automated Logic or third-party building automation systems.

The CDU is available worldwide through multiple Carrier manufacturing sites, offering customers both global supply and in-region sourcing at scale.

“Carrier can deliver end-to-end thermal management from chip to chiller through intelligent cooling, digital controls and predictive monitoring and service,” said Christian Senu, Executive Director, Data Centers, Carrier. “The Carrier CDU builds on Carrier’s history of innovation, our focus on customer needs and our available global scale to further expand our data center offerings to help ensure real-time optimization, adaptability and efficiency across data center operations.”

Carrier QuantumLeap is a comprehensive suite of scalable solutions designed to support data center operators through a portfolio of advanced, energy-efficient cooling solutions that include chillers, air handlers, customizable aftermarket programs and a global service network. It also includes Automatic Logic’s innovative building management solutions that maximize energy efficiency and sustainable building operation and Nlyte® Data Center Infrastructure Management software, which helps data center operators manage their hybrid infrastructure across facilities, data centers, colocation, edge and the cloud.
