Carrier Chillers Among Nominees for Coolest Thing Competition
Charlotte, N.C. -
Carrier’s award-winning commercial chillers are included in a list of more than 100 products vying to be named the “Coolest Thing Made in North Carolina.” Carrier is part of Carrier Global Corporation (NYSE:CARR), global leader in intelligent climate and energy solutions.
The competition, organized by the NC Chamber, is in its sixth year of spotlighting North Carolina’s technologically driven manufacturing industry, which generates more than 13% of the gross state product and employees more than 10% of the state’s workforce, according to the NC Chamber and National Association of Manufacturers.
Carrier produces several varieties of air- and water-cooled commercial chillers and heat pumps in Charlotte, which is also home to Carrier’s North America Applied HVAC business. The factory on Old Statesville Road opened in 1999 and recently underwent several upgrades designed to increase production capabilities and capacity.
“Carrier is proud to be part of North Carolina’s manufacturing industry and even prouder of the work our employees do each day in Charlotte to create HVAC solutions for customers around the world,” said Steve Ribaudo, Vice President and General Manager of Commercial HVAC Americas, Carrier. “Carrier is a leader in the cooling industry and Charlotte continues to be one of the key components of our success. We’re excited to have our chillers, which literally make spaces cooler, in the running for Coolest Thing.”
Online voting is currently open at coolestthingmadeinnc.com. Anyone with a valid email address may vote once per day. The field of candidates will narrow over several rounds of voting until the winning products are announced on Oct. 2., the day before National Manufacturing Day.
The Coolest Thing Made in North Carolina competition recognizes three winners: one for businesses with fewer than 100 employees, one for businesses with 100 – 1,000 employees and one for businesses with more than 1,000 employees.
Carrier’s Charlotte Factory continues the innovation that began when Willis Carrier created the world’s first modern air conditioning system in 1902. Carrier’s ties to the Charlotte area go back nearly as far. He helped install the first industrial “central station” humidifying system in 1906, when Chronicle Cotton Mills of Belmont, North Carolina purchased his “Apparatus for Treating Air.”
Carrier unveiled his centrifugal refrigeration machine, or chiller, in 1922. The invention played an important role in population migrations to warmer climates and played a role in setting the conditions for modern hospitals and high-rise office and apartment buildings.
Carrier chillers built in Charlotte continue to support manufacturing, airports, data centers, schools, sports venues and office buildings, with the award-winning AquaEdge® 19MV water-cooled centrifugal chiller and the AquaSnap® 30RC air-cooled scroll chiller among the products that are shipped globally.
