Carrier to Distribute New Toshiba Variable Refrigerant Flow System in Southeast Asia
Carrier today announced the launch of the Toshiba Super Modular Multi System 7 (SMMS-7), a new climate-centric and application-driven variable refrigerant flow (VRF) system, optimized for use in Southeast Asia. Engineered from the ground up, the Toshiba VRF system for buildings is designed to achieve increased efficiency, operational reliability and a minimal environmental footprint for rapidly growing tropical urban landscapes. Carrier Thailand, who along with other Carrier entities will distribute SMMS-7 in Southeat Asia, is a part of Carrier, a world leader in high-technology heating, air-conditioning and refrigeration solutions, which is a part of UTC Climate, Controls & Security, a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX).

The SMMS-7 is optimized for mid-sized buildings with diverse, multiple zones that require individual controls, such as office buildings, hospitals and hotels. VRF systems offer benefits such as energy efficiency, zoning capabilities, and a faster, more cost-effective installation over conventional heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems. The SMMS-7 boasts several industry-leading enhancements, including:
- Optimized for warm climates:The SMMS-7 features components specifically designed for warm weather operation. The heat exchanger is also redesigned with fewer paths and branches to achieve optimal cooling efficiency.
- Enhanced part load performance:Air conditioning systems are usually designed to deliver the maximum cooling load required by a building but the actual cooling load is typically less during operation. To improve part load efficiency, Toshiba leverages its core technology, a twin rotary compressor with superior efficiency, across a wide range of operations. By engineering every component to deliver efficient cooling for the tropical climate in Southeast Asia, the SMMS-7 VRF has best-in-class efficiency of up to 4.82 at full load and 7.27 at 50% load.
- Reliable Uptime: The compressor is carefully protected by an oil level management system coupled with a responsive oil return circuit that returns oil from the tank should a level drop be detected. With a dedicated machine room that is segregated from its heat exchanger, the failure risk of the electrical parts is reduced by minimizing exposure to environmental contaminants.
- Enhanced maintenance and troubleshooting:The Smart Manager enables technicians to monitor and troubleshoot system conditions regardless of weather conditions, with performance data accessible through a secure network. Technicians can respond and diagnostics can be performed more quickly without opening the unit.
- Less refrigerant and minimal footprint:By refining components to deliver maximum cooling capacity while reducing form factor concurrently, the SMMS-7 can reduce the additional refrigerant required by more than 20 percent compared to previous models. Its footprint is also reduced by 24 percent, increasing the availability of space for other facilities.
Toshiba has also launched the MiNi-SMMS7, which has a cooling capacity of 4HP to 6HP, and is able to operate at a high ambient temperature of up to 50 degrees Celsius.
The SMMS-7 was developed to meet a growing demand for high performance building systems and technologies as a result of current and emerging trends in Southeast Asia. With rapid urban growth, there is renewed interest in maximixing usable building space and energy efficiency. The SMMS-7 delivers on both.
