As a general rule of thumb, air conditioners and heat pumps provide about 18,000–60,000 BTU/h (1.5–5 tons) of cooling capacity, with roughly 400–600 square feet of conditioned space per ton as a very broad starting point. However, square-footage rules are only estimates. Your local Carrier dealer can perform a Manual J load calculation that accounts for climate, insulation, windows, home orientation, occupancy and other factors before selecting equipment.
  • Climate: Your region determines the best hardware. For northern homes, cold climate heat pumps are designed to perform efficiently even in freezing temperatures.
  • Energy Efficiency: Look for a high SEER2 rating for cooling efficiency and a high HSPF2 rating for heating efficiency. As a general guide, 16+ SEER2 is considered a good efficiency level, while 18–20+ SEER2 represents high efficiency. For heating, 8.5+ HSPF2 is a good target, while 9.5–10.5+ HSPF2 is considered high efficiency.
