Expert Insights on Building Automation Systems & Controls
Occupied-building BAS retrofits require contractors to manage labor pressure, incomplete records, mixed equipment, and constrained shutdown windows without losing control of field execution. The draft presents a process centered on early site verification, defined responsibilities, upstream engineering, disciplined commissioning, and documentation that supports future technicians.
In 2024, U.S. commercial buildings used 16.45 quadrillion Btu of energy — about 17% of U.S. total — and spent more than $241 billion. As ASHRAE 90.1-2022, IECC updates, and Building Performance Standards expand, the BAS is becoming the mechanism that proves HVAC systems perform as code requires.
Moving beyond reactive maintenance is critical to controlling costs and improving building performance. Modern building automation systems (BAS) integrate HVAC and controls to deliver real-time visibility, enabling proactive optimization and unlocking significant efficiency gains. The result is a more intelligent, connected facility that reduces waste, protects assets, and empowers teams with clear, actionable insights.
A strategic approach to building automation focuses on HVAC‑centric design, simplifying system integration while improving performance. By standardizing controls and connecting core mechanical equipment with complementary systems, organizations can reduce complexity, lower costs, and minimize setup time. The result is a more efficient, resilient, and user‑friendly building environment that supports energy goals and long‑term operational success.
The facility management industry is currently navigating a significant generational shift. According to recent data from the International Facilities Management Association (IFMA), as much as 40 percent of the existing facility management workforce is expected to retire by 2026. This mass exit of experienced professionals means that years of institutional knowledge is walking out the door at a time when building systems are becoming more complex.
Modern building automation delivers greater ROI when it prioritizes intuitive, user-friendly controls. By simplifying complex systems and using pre‑engineered integrations, facility teams can reduce training time, improve efficiency, and minimize errors. The result is stronger workforce retention, faster issue resolution, and optimized building performance that drives long‑term value.
Smart building automation uncovers hidden savings by identifying inefficiencies and optimizing system performance. With advanced analytics, integrated controls, and pre‑engineered strategies, facility teams can reduce energy waste, lower operating costs, and extend equipment life. The result is a more efficient, data‑driven building that delivers measurable performance gains.
As building systems become more connected, cybersecurity is essential to protecting operations and enterprise networks. A secure building automation strategy focuses on managing IT and OT integration, reducing vulnerabilities, and using practices like network segmentation to limit risk. The result is a resilient, connected infrastructure that delivers performance without compromising security.
Reducing energy costs starts with smarter building automation strategies. By integrating systems, leveraging pre‑engineered controls, and optimizing performance across HVAC and other assets, organizations can eliminate inefficiencies and improve visibility. These proven approaches help lower operating expenses, enhance comfort, and unlock the full efficiency potential of modern buildings.
Integrating HVAC equipment with intelligent controls unlocks the full potential of building performance. By enabling real-time optimization, advanced energy management, and streamlined operations, connected systems reduce energy use and operational costs while improving comfort. The result is a smarter, more efficient building that delivers lasting performance and savings.
Labor shortages are putting pressure on facility teams managing increasingly complex buildings. Building automation helps bridge the gap by enabling remote monitoring, automating routine tasks, and providing real-time visibility into system performance. The result is a more efficient, empowered workforce that can do more with fewer resources while maintaining reliable operations.
Successful building automation starts with proper installation and commissioning. By prioritizing detailed planning, seamless system integration, and proven best practices, teams can avoid common pitfalls and ensure reliable performance from day one. The result is improved efficiency, enhanced occupant comfort, and a building system that delivers on its full potential.
