Enhancing the Lives We Live for the World We Share

Willis Carrier's invention of modern air conditioning has been changing the way people live since 1902. Explore how his innovation helped launch entire industries, enabled new possibilities and continues to impact your life today.

Protecting the Global Food Supply

For more than half a century, Carrier has led the way in the safe, efficient transport of foods and other perishables.

Revolutionizing Healthcare

In 1914, the Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania used a Carrier air conditioning system to establish the first incubator room, providing a comfortable environment for infants. Throughout the 20th century, Carrier would expand their reach in this market by air conditioning hospitals in Mexico City and Cairo, Egypt, and later in New York City, helping the Lenox Hill Hospital use a cold diffuser in its cryotherapy room.

By 1940, the American Medical Association's Council on Physical Therapy accepted Carrier room ventilators equipped with a pollen-type filter and authorized the use of the AMA seal.

Impact Across industries

Air conditioning didn't just cool buildings, it reshaped how we live. It kept theaters open through blockbuster summers, made long rail and sea journeys livable, and let retailers run thousands of stores in comfort. It made mining safer, wartime manufacturing more precise, and became the quiet infrastructure behind nearly everything we build, move, sell, and create.

Enhancing Experiences

From Madison Square Garden to the Olympics to the Houston Astrodome and some of today’s most iconic stadiums, Carrier has a history of helping the world enjoy sports, education and leisure through installations of specialized systems.

Elevating Guest Experience & Expectations

From the Astor Hotel in New York City to the Baltimore and Muehlebach hotels in Kansas City, Missouri, the Carrier company pushed into new frontiers between 1903 and 1914.

These important installations included mechanical refrigeration and were targeted at the very earliest kind of comfort cooling—not just improving production efficiencies, but trying to make people feel better.

Remarkable Achievements & Astonishing Firsts

Preserving History

In places ranging from the Sistine Chapel to Mount Vernon, Carrier helps protect historical sites and artifacts so that they can be enjoyed by visitors for generations to come.

Making Fun Cool

Inventing New Eras

The brief was a printing press. Nobody mentioned the suburbs, the space program or the Sistine Chapel. That's where it landed.

Inspired by Pioneers, Empowering What's Next

Data Centers

The invention of computers and the internet has created new industries and redefined our world. At every step, Carrier has helped make it possible with solutions that efficiently cool the data centers that power the internet and drive our modern global economy -- and Carrier's role only grows more critical as data and digital infrastructure define what's next.

Shaping Skylines

Beginning with the first installation of a multi-story building in 1926 (the T.W. Patterson Building in Fresno, California) Carrier has helped efficiently cool ever-taller buildings – and the people inside – for nearly a century. This installation was followed by the 21-story Milam Building in San Antonio, Texas, and in 1928, the Frost National Bank in San Antonio, which was the first bank to be cooled by Carrier centrifugal refrigeration.

Today, as urbanization continues at an unprecedented rate, Carrier’s role is more critical than ever before.

Air. Data. Temperature. Energy. Invisible forces, there at every moment. They are what drive us to innovate, protect and create, with brilliant minds and hearts full of possibility.
