HVAC Maintenance

I recently had a new Carrier heat pump system installed in my home by Major Heating and Air Conditioning and can only say positive things about them and the overall experience. Sebastian Elkins did an excellent job of communicating with me from the estimating process through the job installation and the Xcel/Colorado rebate handling. He is very responsive to questions/concerns and is an excellent communicator. The installers (Shane, Rob and Larson) did a fantastic job, worked hard during the two-day installation in the heat, and always treated me and my home with the utmost respect during the job (which I very much appreciated!). Also, Major insists on filing for County permits for their jobs which is a huge positive for me in that Major knows their installation work will be inspected and held to high standards. I am a registered professional engineer in Colorado with over 40 years of experience in engineering, so I take a very analytical approach to home projects of this scale and cost. As such, I found myself very involved in the Manual J calculations used for sizing the system due to the differences in approaches I saw between the five companies from whom I received bids. Major uses the Cool Calc application which appears to be the standard in the HVAC world. I believe that it is important for any HVAC company to take the time to do the calculations correctly to get the equipment sizing right rather than taking a broad brush, rule-of-thumb approach. Ask estimators for their calculations and compare them. Manual J calculations for the bids I received were dramatically different because of something as simple as making accurate measurement of my home’s square footage. Sebastian was very helpful, patient, and transparent in working with me on his Manual J calculations. He took the time to use the LIDAR feature of the Cool Calc software to make an accurate 3D image of my floor plan for direct input into the software. His efforts in this regard had a huge impact on reducing the uncertainty around equipment sizing and ultimately cost. According to Google Gemini, there are more than 2,000 distinct HVAC contractors working in the greater metro Denver area. Therefore, if you are doing a complete HVAC system replacement in your home (like I did), it’s going to be difficult at best to decide who to call and who to trust. As I learned in this process and many others have stated, it’s not so much which equipment manufacturer you go with but rather the quality of the installation you get. Major certainly provided me with that sense of assurance throughout the entire process. I would highly recommend them.

It just took a couple of days from making the decision to replace our furnace to having it installed. The installer was knowledgeable and approachable. Very satisfied with the whole experience.
