Time for a Spring Checkup: Schedule Air Conditioning Service

Most people understand the health benefits of an annual wellness visit to their doctor. Whether they do it or not is another story! It’s no different with your air conditioning system.

Scheduling an annual tune-up of your cooling system each spring can be the catalyst for keeping utility bills in check, preventing bigger (and more expensive) repairs down the road, and maybe more importantly, ensuring that when summer turns up the heat, your air conditioner turns up the cool, indoor comfort.

Here’s why: when your AC system is running, air circulating through its components can deposit airborne particles like dust, mold spores and more on its interior surfaces. They accumulate over time, and if not addressed they can restrict airflow, reduce cooling ability and reduce the life of the system through corrosion and material breakdown.

Can I handle my AC maintenance?

Cleaning or replacing the system’s air filter is an excellent DIY project most homeowners can handle, and it definitely helps reduce the buildup of contaminants in your cooling system. However, qualified HVAC contractors have the equipment and expertise to dig a little deeper. They can clean and tune-up interior components, evaluate system operation to be sure it is cooling effectively, and even make minor repairs that might prevent bigger ones in the future.

What to expect during AC service

A standard AC service, tune-up, or clean and check appointment will last about an hour. In most cases, your technician will run the system in all of its modes to check that cooling temperatures are correct, the system is functioning correctly, and check for any signs of malfunction. While every contractor is a little different, your tune-up might include:

  1. Check refrigerant charge levels and air flow, check for refrigerant leaks
  2. Make sure all electrical connections are sound and components are working properly
  3. Check for secure physical connections of individual parts
  4. Check the run capacitor for bulging and/or unusual markings or color
  5. Check and clean outdoor condenser coil
  6. Check indoor evaporator coil for blockage and apply self-rinsing cleaner when possible
  7. Check and clean the condensate drainage system
  8. Clean and adjust blower components
  9. Check the air filter, and replace or clean, if needed

Cost of air conditioning service

The cost will vary depending on your dealer, but many HVAC contractors offer special pricing for clean and check visits, or offer service contracts that include spring and fall checkups along with preferred pricing for additional service and parts.

Schedule air conditioning service

So, if spring is in the air, you know summer is right around the corner. Now would be a great time to call your local Carrier dealer to schedule a system tune-up. It’s just what the doctor ordered for a healthier, longer lasting air conditioning system.
