E-Drive® Technology
A proven, industry shaping technology
E-Drive® is Carrier Transicold’s patented all electric refrigeration technology, pioneered in 1999 and now backed by 27 years of continuous innovation and real world operation. By eliminating the mechanical transmissions used in conventional belt driven refrigeration systems, E-Drive converts engine power into electricity through a generator, delivering superior reliability, efficiency, and cold chain performance, while drastically improved refrigerant leak containment.
Leading all electric transport refrigeration for 27 years
E-Drive® technology is at the heart of Carrier Transicold’s Vector® trailer refrigeration systems, Pulsor® light truck refrigeration units, as well as Eco-Drive® power modules, powering its complete range of engineless refrigeration units, and delivering proven all electric performance that supports today’s low emission transport operations
E-Drive®: proven experience since 1999
The E Drive® all electric architecture replaces mechanical transmissions by transforming engine power into electrical energy. This unique and patented solution was designed from the outset to deliver best in class total cost of ownership, reliability, and temperature control.

History of Innovation
The E-Drive story begins
Carrier Transicold introduced E-Drive in 1999 with the first Vector 1800 refrigeration unit for semi-trailers. This original architecture used a semi-hermetic compressor to eliminate the mechanical transmissions of belt-driven refrigeration systems and convert engine power into electricity to run the unit. From the outset, it was designed to deliver strong performance in reliability and total cost of ownership (TCO), with high temperature accuracy, reduced refrigerant leakage and fewer serviceable parts.
Enhanced efficiency with fully hermetic scroll compressor
In 2010, Carrier Transicold introduced an enhanced generation of E Drive on the first Vector 1550s. This iteration featured a fully hermetic scroll compressor, elevating refrigeration efficiency while reducing consumption and noise, contributing to lower CO₂ emissions.
High Efficiency (HE) range and further system refinements
Building on E-Drive innovation, Carrier launched its High Efficiency range beginning with Vector HE 19 in 2018. This generation incorporated a refined refrigeration system and a new evaporator air management system, enabling additional reductions in power consumption and noise while boosting cold chain performance.
3rd generation E-Drive architecture with inverter technology
Carrier Transicold continues to push E-Drive forward with a third generation of E Drive architecture, featuring advanced inverter technology that adjusts compressor speed according to real-time temperature requirements in the load space, pushing even further the boundaries of efficiency.
A cornerstone of Carrier Transicold electrification
With more than 300,000 units sold worldwide, E-Drive® remains a cornerstone of Carrier Transicold’s refrigeration platforms and a key enabler of engineless, hybrid, and fully electric solutions across truck and trailer applications.
