Carrier Transicold’s Engineless Refrigeration Unit Meets Demands for Sustainability and Quality at Pflaum Logistik

Pflaum Logistics is turning to Carrier Transicold’s engineless refrigeration unit to help meet the needs of its wide range of customers throughout Germany, while maintaining the quality of perishable goods. The logistics company has selected 30 engineless refrigeration units, which have strong cooling capacity, minimal maintenance and a low impact on the environment. Carrier Transicold, which operates in Germany as Carrier Transicold Deutschland GmbH, is part of UTC Climate, Controls & Security, a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX).
Earlier in the year Pflaum Logistics, based in Strullendorf near Bamberg, Germany, equipped 20 combinations of rigid trucks and draw-bar trailers with Carrier Transicold’s undermount engineless refrigeration units. The trucks are used to deliver various perishable goods, from fresh to frozen produce, to supermarkets nationwide and in bordering countries.
“We are very pleased with the refrigeration units”, said Dieter Steindörfer, chief technical officer, Spedition Pflaum Logistics. “They are reliable with limited risks of breakdowns. This engineless solution is a huge benefit.” As a result, the logistics company has purchased 30 more units to round out its fleet.
In 2016, Carrier Transicold acquired TRS Transportkoeling b.v., a Dutch manufacturer and service provider of sustainable transport refrigeration systems for trailers and trucks. TRS designs, produces and services engineless refrigeration systems using hydro-electric power generated by a truck’s ultra-clean Euro 6 engine.
“The acquisition of TRS enables us to expand our offering energy-efficient and resource-friendly refrigeration solutions, which increases our efforts to develop a sustainable cold chain“, said Andreas Wallmeyer, managing director, Carrier Transicold Germany and Austria.
The unit features a hermetically sealed, electrically driven scroll compressor, thus eliminating belts and shaft seals. The hydraulic system drives a generator that delivers electrical power to the unit, without the need for the refrigeration unit to use its own diesel engine. The unit’s hermetic system allows for fewer leaks and requires little maintenance. Integrated into the hydraulic system is a control unit that ensures the generator consistently generates 400 Volt/50 Hz. This maintains constant power, even when the truck is idling in heavy traffic - eliminating any need for the driver to rev the truck’s engine to provide sufficient cooling power.
“Since the maintenance costs are hardly existent, the unit will more than pay for itself during the unit’s life-cycle,” added Steindörfer. “Even when idling, the refrigeration unit delivers a 100 percent refrigeration capacity.” Additionally, fuel consumption of trucks equipped with the new unit is measurably lower than of those using refrigeration units that require their own engine.
The TRS technology is also exceptionally quiet, and fully PIEK certified – meaning it can operate below 60 decibels, which makes it ideal for night-time deliveries in urban areas.
“While the technical features have tipped the scale toward Carrier Transicold, the noise level of the unit operating at PIEK level below 60 dB, which helps us comply with noise standards, was also an important feature,” said Ruth Pflaum, Pflaum Logistics.
