The Client

Global Switch is a global data centre operator providing secure, scalable infrastructure to the world’s leading companies and innovators. Global Switch is known as a reliable, high-quality service provider. A partner that is attentive and accommodating, collaborative and transparent. Above all, Global Switch values the long-term relationships it builds with its partners.

In data centre environments, cooling systems are subject to high requirements in terms of reliability, energy efficiency and scalability. The cooling installation is designed to deliver reliable performance, efficient energy use and the flexibility to grow with future operational requirements.

The Challenge

At the Global Switch Amsterdam data centre site, two existing air-cooled chillers were replaced as part of a targeted upgrade of the cooling installation.

The upgrade focuses on improving the energy efficiency and future-readiness of the installation, without compromising the reliability required in a mission-critical data centre environment. It also contributes to PUE optimisation and prepares the installation for higher chilled water temperatures.

Timing was a key challenge. The solution needed to be operational ahead of increased seasonal cooling demand. This required careful coordination to minimise disruption to the live data centre environment.

The Challenges
The Solution

Two Carrier AquaForce® 30XF-Z chillers were installed to replace the existing air-cooled units. The 30XF-Z chillers are designed for high-efficiency, mission-critical data centre cooling and combine integrated free cooling with a refrigerant with a very low GWP value.

Technical Execution

The solution was seamlessly integrated into the existing infrastructure, without disrupting operational continuity. The installation is designed for future operating conditions, including higher chilled water temperatures.

Integrated free cooling makes optimum use of favourable outdoor temperatures, significantly reducing the use of mechanical cooling. This leads to lower energy consumption and contributes to the sustainability objectives of the site.

The Result

The project was delivered according to schedule and commissioned before spring. The new installation delivers a significant improvement in energy efficiency and supports further optimisation of PUE performance.

By combining integrated free cooling with a refrigerant with a very low GWP, both energy consumption and CO emissions are reduced. As a result, Global Switch Amsterdam benefits from a future-ready cooling solution that combines performance and reliability in a mission-critical environment.
