Carrier’s CO2OLtec® Refrigeration System Cools one of the World’s Most Modern Distribution Centers
EBERGASSING, Austria -
Carrier Commercial Refrigeration Austria now provides sustainable carbon dioxide (CO2) refrigeration technologies for SPAR's new distribution center in Ebergassing, Austria. This is the first transcritical CO2 installation for distribution centers in Austria. The environmentally sustainable CO2OLtec® system helps to improve the center's energy efficiency and to reduce its carbon footprint by using the natural refrigerant CO2. Carrier is a world leader in high-technology heating, air-conditioning and refrigeration solutions, and is a part of UTC Climate, Controls & Security, a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX).
With the new distribution center in Ebergassing, SPAR is setting new standards in sustainability and innovation, which are key parts of SPAR's corporate philosophy. From innovative product ranges to sustainable site modernization and advanced technological logistics, SPAR takes a leading role. It has received a platinum pre-certification by the Austrian association for sustainable real estate industry, Österreichische Gesellschaft für nachhaltige Immobilienwirtschaft. SPAR's focus on innovation and sustainability is why it chose the Carrier CO2OLtec system to provide energy-efficient refrigeration for its new building. Out of the total 44,000 square meters of floor space, 19,000 square meters are dedicated to refrigerated goods.
"Our new distribution center is one of the world's most innovative and sustainable of its kind; not only in terms of logistics management, but also with regard to the refrigeration technology we have implemented," said Gerald Geiger, director, building / energy / technology, SPAR Austria. "Carrier's CO2 system meets our need for a long-term, cost-effective solution."
The CO2OLtec refrigeration racks leverage proven CO2 refrigeration technology to deliver sustainable efficiency for large capacity loads, which are needed in large distribution centers. The waste heat created during the refrigeration process can be collected and redistributed for space heating. Approximately 500 kW of heating capacity is recovered by the CO2OLtec system in SPAR's distribution center.
"This amazing project is not only the first distribution center refrigerated by a CO2 system in Austria, but also one of the largest installations by Carrier in Europe," said Wolfgang Hobisch, managing director, Carrier Commercial Refrigeration, Austria. "We are proud that SPAR has chosen Carrier as its preferred expert for CO2 refrigeration."
