Carrier Installs CO2OLtec® Refrigeration System in Lidl Distribution Center

VANTAA, Finland -

Carrier Oy recently installed a CO2OLtec transcritical booster carbon dioxide (CO2) refrigeration system in a Lidl retail distribution center in central Finland, the first CO2OLtec system to be installed at a Lidl Finland location. The environmentally sustainable CO2OLtec concept uses a natural refrigerant and reduces CO2 emissions. To date, Carrier’s more than 950 CO2OLtec installations have reduced CO2 equivalent emissions by more than 231,000 tons, which is the equivalent of removing more than 55,000 cars from the road. Carrier, the world’s leader in high-technology heating, air-conditioning and refrigeration solutions, is part of UTC Building & Industrial Systems, a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX).

The Lidl distribution center installation marks an emerging area of application for CO2OLtec systems. Refrigeration at the site is provided by four sets of transcritical CO2 booster racks that generate a total cooling capacity of 1.2 megawatts for medium temperature or refrigerated application, and around 400 kilowatts for the low-temperature or frozen application. This total cooling capacity is provided to storage rooms covering an area of more than 11,129 square meters. Speed-controlled compressors, energy-efficient EC fans and intelligent controls work together to ensure maximum energy efficiency.

By integrating a CO2OLheat® unit in the overall system design, a significant amount of process waste heat is recovered for use in defrosting and underfloor heating. The installation, which included the removal of an existing R-404A system and its replacement, was fully managed by Carrier.

“We are proud to provide Lidl sustainable CO2OLtec refrigeration technology, which will help reduce their carbon footprint and realize significant savings based on energy usage,” said Matti Rantaniemi, managing director, Carrier Oy.

The thermodynamic properties of the refrigerant CO2 enabled a significant reduction in copper pipe sizes and refrigerant charge on-site, compared with conventional hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) systems. This allowed for an easier, cost-effective installation. The site, which is remotely monitored by Carrier’s e-service center, will also yield life cycle operating cost savings compared with HFC systems. Carrier has the right refrigerant solution for every application, but every application will not have the same refrigerant solution.
