Transport refrigeration units support delivery of temperature-sensitive meals and healthy food to schools, shelters and nonprofits

DC Central Kitchen, a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit that develops social ventures to fight poverty and hunger, named Carrier as its “Official Cold Chain Sponsor,” revealing two new delivery vehicles equipped with Carrier Transicold 30S direct drive transport refrigeration units donated by the company. Carrier, a world leader in high-technology heating, air-conditioning and refrigeration solutions, is a part of UTC Climate, Controls & Security, a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX).

In addition to transforming wasted food into 5,000 daily nutritious meals for homeless shelters and nonprofits and serving 6,800 award-winning farm-to-school menus to low-income schoolchildren at 15 Washington, D.C. schools, DC Central Kitchen offers a Culinary Job Training program, which equips unemployed, underemployed, and previously incarcerated persons and homeless adults for careers in the food service industry. The current class, number 106, is sponsored by a grant from United Technologies.

“We are proud to support DC Central Kitchen’s efforts to provide a life-changing Culinary Job Training program, and to deliver meals using food that otherwise would be wasted to shelters and nonprofits, and healthy, nutritious meals to schoolchildren in underserved areas of Washington, D.C. every day,” said John Mandyck, ‎Chief Sustainability Officer, United Technologies.

The rigorous, 14-week program includes in-kitchen programming as well as training, job-readiness skills, and self-empowerment sessions that provide a holistic approach to furthering a student’s personal growth.

“Carrier and United Technologies’ support of DC Central Kitchen represents an investment in the infrastructure to not only deliver meals to those in need and to waste less food, but to also inspire solutions that empower marginalized and at-risk people to achieve their own lasting liberation from the cyclical conditions of hunger and poverty,” said Mike Curtin, Jr., CEO, DC Central Kitchen.
