How to Clean Evaporator Coils
Cleaning your evaporator coils involves safely removing dirt, lint, and grease to help your air conditioner or heat pump system operate at peak efficiency. This essential maintenance prolongs the lifespan of your system and ensures you enjoy uninterrupted, whisper-quiet comfort all year long.
At Carrier, our innovative solutions are centered on our customers’ needs. Because the evaporator coil is normally attached to your furnace, we recommend having it professionally cleaned each year before the heating season begins, and ideally again mid-season to maintain optimal energy use.
Can You Clean Evaporator Coils Yourself?
While some homeowners might try to clean their evaporator coil themselves, this service is best handled by a trained Carrier HVAC technician. Relying on an expert ensures your system's advanced technology is protected, preventing accidental damage and guaranteeing reliable performance.
What Are The Steps For Cleaning Evaporator Coils?
A professional coil cleaning involves safely powering down the system, removing debris from the coils, and clearing the drainage system. Before each cooling season, your Carrier expert will typically complete the following steps:
- Turn the air conditioner or heat pump and furnace off and wait until they have cooled down.
- Remove the access panel to expose the coil.
- Vacuum coils coated with dirt or lint using a soft brush attachment.
- Clean coils coated with oil or grease using a mild detergent and water solution, being careful not to splash water on the insulation.
- Inspect the drain pan and condensate drain while checking the cooling coil.
- Clean the drain pan and condensate drain by removing any foreign matter.
- Flush the pan and drain tube with clear water. If the drain tube is restricted, it can generally be cleared by high-pressure water (cutting the plastic line and working outside the condensate pan to clean the tube).
- Replace the panel when finished cleaning.
- Turn the HVAC system power back on.
Why Clean Your Evaporator Coils?
Clint Newsome, owner of Albany Air Conditioning and Heating Co. in Albany, GA emphasizes the importance of keeping evaporator coils clean as part of regular HVAC maintenance to support efficiency, airflow, and system longevity.
“If you keep your evaporator coil clean, that keeps your airflow clean, that keeps your airflow moving throughout the system at peak, just like the day you bought it,” Newsome said. “Having your evaporator coil cleaned once or twice a year is a big benefit. It keeps your air flowing properly.
It keeps your air conditioner cooling properly, and your motor doesn't have to work as hard on your indoor air handling unit. Therefore, you have the opportunity to lower your energy bill because your motor is not having to run as hard with a clean evaporator coil. With a clean evaporator coil, you don't have your dust and dirt build up on it, and you're not getting the rust in certain spots where you would.”
