Noisy Furnace
February 26, 2020
We replaced our 25 year old high efficiency Carrier furnace, model 58SXA, with another Carrier high efficiency furnace, model 59TP6A. The old one was still in a reasonably good condition, but there would come a day sometime soon, when I would have to spend a few hundred dollars on service and repairs. Because there were a number of incentives to buy a new one, we opted for another Carrier furnace. The old one served us very well and we were expecting even a better performance from the new one. Well, the furnace works quite well, however, there is one huge problem with it. It is much noisier than the previous one. In product literature Carrier claims that it is a quiet furnace. It's anything, but. When the furnace fires up, it's nice and gentle. When the fan goes to higher speed, it's noticeably louder, even louder than our old furnace. Within about two minutes the fan goes into its high speed and then it's like being next to a jet engine. At least that is the effect it produces for someone with good hearing. I find that to be very dissapointing. Based on that, I would not recommend this furnace.

This Carrier unit replaced a Trane product that was 20 years, 1 month, and 5 days old. My old furnace was not broken but needed some serious maintenance work before the start of winter so I decided to change it out. The new one has been running for a month or so now and about the only thing I can say at this point is that it is so much quieter. I haven't had a fuel or electric bill yet so cannot see if there has been a significant change in consumption. The Carrier furnace is now a partner to my Carrier Heat Pump so I'm expecting more efficiency between the two but am not sure it will be evident to me. I do like the relatively "gigantic" air filter and believe that will work to my advantage as far as blowing dust through the house goes.
