A Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) system has one of the lowest life cycle costs of any system on the market today while providing superior comfort, energy efficiency and easy design, installation, and maintenance. Using Carrier’s new white paper, Variable Refrigerant Flow Systems: Flexible Solutions for Comfort, designers, architects and commercial building owners can easily understand the benefits of a VRF system. The paper, available free on Carrier.com, outlines the advantages offered by the most advanced VRF systems and general guidelines for choosing a heat pump over a heat recovery system. Carrier, the world’s leader in high technology heating, air-conditioning and refrigeration solutions, is a part of UTC Climate, Controls & Security, a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX).
VRF technology varies the flow of refrigerant to multiple indoor units based on demand. The flow is adjusted to maintain the room temperature smoothly without fluctuation. The ability to control the amount of refrigerant that is provided to fan coil units located throughout a building makes the VRF technology ideal for applications with varying loads or where zoning is required. Engineered to minimize ductwork, VRF systems are also cost-effective to install. Additional savings are gained from VRF systems by modulating compressor speed based on the actual load in the space.
“One of the major advantages of a VRF system is its flexibility. Multiple types and sizes of fan coils are available to fit any application,” stated Greg Alcorn, vice president, commercial sales and marketing, Carrier. “Carrier understands that customer requirements vary and this is another Carrier offering that can meet a specific site need.”
VRF systems available on the market today differ according to the number and type of compressors. Systems are available either as heat pump or heat recovery systems for those applications where simultaneous heating and cooling is required.
Alcorn added, “Building on our legacy of innovation and training, Carrier’s white papers focus on issues that are shaping the industry. There is a continual demand for high performance systems that can provide sustainable energy benefits that contribute to earning Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) points and VRF systems are one way to achieve this.”
