Every summer when the mercury rises, people around the world sit back and enjoy the cool, productive comfort of air conditioning. This year marks the 110th anniversary of the invention of modern air conditioning by Dr. Willis Haviland Carrier on July 17, 1902. Carrier, the world’s leader in high technology heating, ventilation, air-conditioning and refrigeration (HVACR) solutions, is celebrating this milestone with the launch of a new website dedicated to its rich history, and containing little-known vignettes about Willis Carrier’s life and work. Carrier is a part of UTC Climate, Controls & Security, a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX).
The new site, www.WillisCarrier.com, will also feature a special “110 to the 110th” countdown of facts about the famed inventor and industry-leading company, publishing one tidbit each day leading up to the 110th anniversary in July. In 1902, Willis Carrier, a humble, but determined, engineer, solved one of mankind's most elusive challenges by controlling the indoor environment. A leading engineer of his day, Carrier would go on to file more than 80 patents over the course of his career. His genius would enable incredible advancements in health care, manufacturing processes, research, building capacities, food preservation, transportation, art and historical conservation, general productivity, indoor comfort and much more.
In addition to the new history website, Carrier will publish in June the company’s newly commissioned 148-page, hardcover book, chronicling the robust 110-year history.
“Willis Carrier's foresight changed the world forever and paved the way for over a century of once-impossible innovations,” said John Mandyck, chief sustainability officer, UTC Climate, Controls & Security. “Today, Carrier honors his legacy by reinventing the industry through continued innovation and a commitment to sustainability.”
