“Cool by Carrier” Innovation for a High Performance, Efficient and Sustainable Cold Chain

Sep 19, 2012

HANOVER, Germany

Leading global transport refrigeration specialist Carrier Transicold unveiled its “Cool by Carrier” label and related transport refrigeration solutions at the 2012 Internationale Automobil-Ausstellung (IAA) show in Hanover. Carrier Transicold helps improve global transport and shipping temperature control with a complete line of equipment for refrigerated trucks, trailers and containers and is a part of UTC Climate, Controls & Security, a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX).

“Developing innovative cold chain solutions is ingrained in the culture of Carrier Transicold, where respect for the cold chain is crucial to ensure perishable, fresh and frozen goods are delivered in optimum condition to customers,” said David Appel, president, Carrier Transicold. “The ‘Cool by Carrier’ label expresses the technology and expertise of Carrier Transicold to maintain cold chain performance, maximize cost efficiency and minimize environmental impact for our customers.”

The “Cool by Carrier” labels are designed around four themes:
•“Coolnovation” by Carrier – innovation for optimum cold chain performance
•“Econovation” by Carrier – innovation for cost-efficient operations
•“Greenovation” by Carrier – innovation that is environmentally sound
•Service by Carrier – for a perfectly maintained cold chain

“The 2012 IAA show coincides with the 110th anniversary of Dr. Willis Carrier’s invention of modern air conditioning,” said Bertrand Gueguen, vice president, Carrier Transicold - Europe Truck/Trailer. “In this same spirit of innovation, we’re introducing best-in-class solutions, such as the new Vector 1950, and the new ‘Cool by Carrier’ label.”

Innovative Cold Chain with “Coolnovation” by Carrier
In addition to the Vector 1950 units, visitors to the Carrier stand will be able to see three new high-capacity Supra models offering up to 12,000 watts capacity for trucks. New fans increase airflow by 24 percent for quick temperature recovery and improved air management. The use of a 7mm condenser and smaller compressor deliver lower fuel consumption per watt, helping to improve the Supra unit’s efficiency.

Carrier’s innovative Pulsor range for light commercial vehicles, with a load space of 12 to 30 cubic meters, reaches full refrigeration capacity at low speed (1,000 rpm), providing “constant cold” throughout the delivery cycle. This makes it ideally suited for use in refrigerated vans that make frequent stops with repeated door openings and closings in congested city centres. Carrier’s patented E-Drive technology can also be found at the heart of the Pulsor unit, combining an inverter with a variable speed hermetic compressor. A demonstration of the Pulsor unit’s quick pulldown will take place at 2 p.m. daily during the IAA show, at Carrier Transicold’s external space, stand P35 in the Hermesturm open-air section.

Cost Efficiency with “Econovation”
Operating a cost-effective cold chain can be a challenge for many transport companies. Carrier’s E-Drive all-electric technology provides the right solution. For example, a large retailer in the U.K., operating a fleet of 700 Vector-equipped trailers with E-Drive technology, reported a 99.7 percent on-the-road availability. The statistics are based on a series of key performance indicators measured by Carrier Transicold to demonstrate fleet uptime.
Carrier’s Vector 1550 unit combines an economizer with a hermetic compressor to allow the use of a 1.5 litre diesel engine. This results in up to a 40 percent increase in refrigeration capacity during pulldown, which is automatically reduced during the temperature regulation phase. By delivering adequate capacity according to the refrigeration phases, energy consumption is drastically reduced.

“Greenovation” Helps Reduce Environmental Impact
With reduction of environmental impact in mind, Carrier Transicold’s “Greenovation” includes the City Line of truck and trailer refrigeration units to help transport professionals meet the requirements of doing business in urban areas. The City Line is composed of the Vector City range, low noise units for trailers compliant with the Piek standards, and the Supra City Z engineless unit for trucks, which reduces emissions of particles, nitrogen oxide, carbon and hydrocarbons. The Supra City is the latest addition to this City Line with full Piek standard compliance for low noise under 60 decibels. It’s an ideal solution for night deliveries in urban and residential neighbourhoods.

Maintaining the Cold Chain with Around-the-Clock Service
Carrier Transicold Europe’s team of transport refrigeration service professionals helps customers deliver refrigerated cargo in optimum condition.
Visitors to the IAA show will be able to experience first-hand the service expertise that Carrier Transicold Europe provides at a mobile training trailer on display at Carrier Transicold’s external space, stand P35 in the Hermesturm open-air section. Carrier Transicold Europe has approximately 1,700 expert technicians across 550 regional centres ready to help customers maximise equipment uptime. A customer hotline is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week in 17 languages and a new service app for smart phones enables quick and easy contact with service centres in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

Innovation for the Future
Building on 110 years of innovation, Carrier Transicold leads technology into the future. A concept trailer refrigeration unit using carbon dioxide (CO2) as a natural refrigerant will be on display at the IAA show. With a Global Warming Potential (GWP) equal to one, the concept CO2 unit compares very favourably to the conventional synthetic hydroflurocarbon (HFC) refrigerants.
The concept trailer unit is also equipped with a particle filter to help reduce particle emissions from the diesel engine while still allowing the unit to operate autonomously from the truck engine. The concept unit uses an advanced control system similar to those used in automotive and heavy equipment controls. Advanced electronics and separation of functions result in a highly reliable system that is user-friendly and provides enhanced efficiency and flexibility.
