Scottish haulier GSM Transport operates refrigerated transport services from its headquarters in Annan and a smaller depot in Glasgow.

The company, which began trading in 1996, has built its reputation on excellent and efficient customer service in delivering chilled produce to businesses across Scotland, northern England and mainland Europe.

After securing a temperature-controlled milk delivery contract for a Glasgow dairy, GSM Transport turned to Carrier Transicold to expand its fleet with two new trailers. GSM Transport selected versatile Vector™ 1550 refrigeration systems for the deal, mounted to 13.6-metre Gray & Adams tri-axle reefers.

The pair join a fleet of five tractor units and six trailers at GSM Transport, all of which operate with Carrier Transicold temperature-controlled systems.

The Vector 1550 units are ideally suited for GSM Transport’s milk delivery contract, combining a cooling capacity of up to 14,995 watts with optimised fuel efficiency.

The company will also benefit from Carrier Transicold’s patented E-Drive™ allelectric technology, which can reduce refrigerant leak rates by up to 55 per cent versus conventional systems using standard technology, thereby significantly cutting CO2 emissions.

“The beauty of the Vector range means you can pick the most efficient model for the application”

The results

At 704 kilograms, including electric standby functionality, the lightweight Vector 1550 units enable GSM Transport to maximise payload carrying potential, with the two new trailers expected to remain in service for the next seven years.

The systems’ economiser supplies up to a 40 per cent increase in refrigeration capacity during pull-down, before automatically reducing during the temperature regulation phase to save fuel – all while maintaining exceptional cold chain performance.

“The beauty of the Vector range means you can pick the most efficient model for the application,” said Jim Morrison, owner, GSM Transport. “We’ve got more powerful Vector 1950 MT systems on our multi-temperature contracts, but for dairy operations the Vector 1550 units are ideal. I just like the way Carrier Transicold works; I’ve always had good service.”

The Vector 1550 units’ E-Drive system also removes a number of serviceable parts from the unit, substantially reducing maintenance and downtime and helping to deliver precise temperature control of +/- 0.8 degrees Celsius.
