Carrier Corp. Plays a Role in Colorado’s “Bottom-up” Approach to Economic Development

SYRACUSE, N.Y., United States
When Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper recently announced his statewide economic development plan during a press conference at Ice Energy® in Windsor, Co., representatives from Carrier Corp were front and center. Carrier, the world’s leader in high technology heating, air-conditioning and refrigeration solutions and a business unit of United Technologies Corp. (UTX), has a strategic partnership with Ice Energy that complements the Governor’s “bottom-up” approach to economic development in the state.
Through this partnership, Carrier and Ice Energy have developed and delivered an innovative hybrid cooling solution that pairs Carrier commercial packaged HVAC systems with Ice Energy’s distributed thermal energy storage technology for small to mid-sized commercial buildings. This offers a powerful change in how – and more importantly when – energy is consumed for air conditioning, significantly reducing a building’s daytime energy demand.
“At Carrier, we take pride in providing a variety of sustainable solutions to building designers and owners. Preservation of the environment and protecting our finite natural resources is a central tenet of our business. We've consistently demonstrated our adherence to these values by creating environmentally sound products that consume less energy and incorporate innovative materials,” said Greg Alcorn, vice president, Commercial Sales and Marketing for Carrier.
Under terms of the agreement, select Carrier WeatherMaker® and WeatherMaster® rooftop models, ranging from 4-20 tons, can be shipped “Ice-Ready” from the Carrier factory for seamless integration and optimal performance with Ice Energy’s Ice Bear energy storage systems. In addition, Carrier Corp. will work as a preferred provider with Ice Energy to offer new, high-efficiency air conditioning units to Ice Energy customers seeking to replace or upgrade their existing systems in conjunction with an energy storage installation.
“The partnership with Ice Energy was a natural fit with Carrier’s unprecedented reach and reputation throughout the US and internationally. We are pleased they have implemented changes in their manufacturing process to enable seamless integration with our products, directly from their factory,” said Brian Parsonnet, chief technology officer for Ice Energy.
When aggregated and deployed at scale, Ice Energy’s Ice Bear energy storage system represents a new solution equivalent to thousands of megawatts of peak power for utilities, enabling them to deliver reliable, affordable electric service to their customers.
