Carrier Corp. Enhances Line of AquaSnap® Chillers with Puron® Refrigerant

CHARLOTTE, N.C., United States
Carrier Corp., a world leader in heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration (HVACR), has enhanced its AquaSnap® 30RA air-cooled scroll chillers with non-ozone depleting Puron® refrigerant and expanded the range to 60 tons. Carrier Corp. is a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE:UTX).
The enhanced AquaSnap chiller line offers over 4 percent improvement over previous models on full load efficiency and 5 percent on part load. In addition, the units exceed ASHRAE 90.1-2010 part load standards by more than 20 percent, which is critical for customers as these chillers operate in part load more than 95 percent of the time. These leading efficiencies and more are packed into the new, smaller unit. “On average compared to the legacy chillers, the enhanced AquaSnap chiller line provides 25 percent reduction in unit weight, 15 percent footprint reduction and 60 percent reduction in refrigerant charge,” stated Tom Franaszek, chiller product business unit manager, Carrier Building Systems and Services.
Designed as a direct replacement for existing hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC) refrigerant-based legacy chillers, many key features were carried into the new design, including standard ComfortLink™ controls, an optional hydronic package covering the entire product range, single-point power in all sizes, an optional fluid loop storage tank, and standard Aero-Acoustic (low-sound) fans. New offerings include a digital scroll option as a means to provide improved load tracking and an electronic expansion valve (EXV), which provides improved capacity control and eliminates the need for liquid line solenoid valves.
Starting in January 2010, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will no longer allow the use of HCFC-22 in new equipment. AquaSnap 30RA chillers with Puron refrigerant are fully compliant with this regulation and are available in 10-60 tons. “The enhancement of our AquaSnap 30RA chiller completes our offering of environmentally sound and energy-efficient air-cooled chillers, which can be incorporated into Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) Green Building Rating System™ projects,” added Franaszek.
