Carrier Contributes to an Energy Efficient Shanghai 2010 World Expo
May 12, 2009
With the approach of the Shanghai 2010 World Expo, Carrier Corp., the world’s largest provider of heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration (HVAC&R) solutions, is proud to be contributing its leading sustainable building solutions to this global event. Carrier Corp. is a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE:UTX).
Three of the Expo’s five permanent venues -- Expo Boulevard, World Expo Center, and Theme Pavilions -- have selected Carrier’s high performance building solutions.
“As Shanghai gets ready to welcome the world to the 2010 World Expo, Carrier is proud to provide sustainable and energy efficient solutions in order to contribute to a green World Expo,” commented Ross Shuster, president, HVAC-Asia.
Carrier's innovative solutions include river source heat pump systems, ice storage technology, chilled water storage technology, high efficiency variable frequency centrifugal chillers and high efficiency air-cooled screw heat pumps. They address demands for non-ozone depleting, energy efficient and cost effective operations in Expo venues. For example, the Expo Boulevard will achieve 26 percent energy savings annually by applying Carrier’s river source heat pump air conditioning system, as compared to a regular chiller system. This equates to approximately 89,300 tons of water and 288,000 kWh of electricity saved during the World Expo, which is equal to a reduction of 288 tons of carbon dioxide released to the air.
“During the 184 days of Shanghai World Expo, Carrier will spare no effort to ensure reliable operation of Expo pavilions with our high efficiency products and superior services,” said Eric Wei, managing director, Carrier China Distribution and Aftermarket.
As the largest stand-alone structure of the Expo site, the Expo Boulevard is a semi-open structure that will serve as a large transportation and multi-purpose commercial center. At the Expo Boulevard, Carrier applied the technology of river source heat pump to fully leverage the riverside location and achieve cost effective operations and energy efficient performance.
World Expo Center
When completed, the World Expo Center will serve as the main area for ceremonies, conferences, and various forums during Expo Shanghai. Carrier’s new generation of AquaForce® 30XW high efficiency screw chillers were used in this project for ice storage technology. Utilizing electricity to produce ice at night which then cools the building during the day, the efficient system will significantly reduce the electricity usage during peak hours when demand and costs are highest.
Environmental Market Solutions, Inc. (EMSI), a subsidiary of Carrier Corporation, is under contract to provide green building design consultation to help World Expo Center to achieve LEED® Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. EMSI is involved at each stage of the design process, including equipment purchase and on-site construction. Numerous green strategies and technologies have been identified and evaluated for this project, including river source heat pump system, solar utilization, rain water recycling, roof top virescence, maximized daylight, water saving fixtures, and the use of a high efficient irrigation system.
Located in Zone B of the enclosed area of the Expo Site and to the west of Expo Boulevard, the Theme Pavilions will be built into a "green, energy-saving, environmentally-responsible" building with an above-ground area of 80,000 square meters and underground area of 40,000 square meters. Carrier provided the pavilions with its Evergreen® 19XRV variable frequency centrifugal chillers and its new 30XQ AquaForce® air-cooled high-efficiency screw heat pumps, to optimize operation through high part-load efficiency.
“Carrier and EMSI are honored to be a part of the design of the 2010 Shanghai Expo,” Shuster stated. “The green values of the Expo are in line with Carrier’s long-term principles to develop and apply energy-efficient, non-ozone depleting, high performance building solutions.”
