HUNTINGTON, Ind., U.S.
UT Electronic Controls (UTEC), a unit of Carrier Corp., a world leader in heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration (HVACR) was awarded Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) Existing Building certification for its manufacturing facility. UTEC is one of eleven manufacturing facilities in the world to achieve LEED status for existing buildings and one of the first of Carrier’s facilities awarded this status. The plant was granted base level certification for an industrial site. Carrier Corp. is a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE:UTX).
The LEED rating system is a standard process for the certification of buildings that meet sustainable design criteria published by the United States Green Building Council (USGBC). LEED certified buildings are deemed more energy efficient, produce fewer carbon emissions and use less water and other natural resources.
To achieve LEED-Existing Building certification, UTEC factory employees reduced water usage by installing low flow hand sinks, toilets, and urinals and eliminated irrigating lawns and landscaping. They also instituted green housekeeping using sustainable cleaning products, equipment, and practices. “We have reduced the impact to the environment in numerous ways, and have already seen a 30 percent improvement in energy efficiency in the UTEC facility,” stated Esther Johnson, vice president and general manager, Carrier Electronics.
“UTEC received IndustryWeek magazine’s 2008 Best Plant award based on performance metrics and its dedication to continually improving people, processes and performance,” noted Kelly Romano, president, Carrier Building Systems and Services. “The LEED certification adds to that dedication the commitment to minimizing our impact on the planet.”
John Mandyck, vice president, Sustainability and Environmental Strategies added, "Green products start in green factories, which makes this achievement another step in the evolution of Carrier's approach to sustainability." Committed to advancing sustainable buildings across the globe, Carrier is the only company in the world to be a founding member of the U.S., China and India green building councils.
Based in Huntington, Ind., UTEC manufactures microprocessor-based controls for heating, ventilation, air-conditioning and refrigeration manufacturers worldwide. The company is also a major supplier of standard and programmable thermostats and zoning systems.
