Carrier Provides Energy-Saving Solutions for Shanghai Harbor International Passenger Transportation Center

May 9, 2008

SHANGHAI, China

Carrier Corp., the world’s largest provider of heating, ventilation, air-conditioning and refrigeration (HVAC&R) solutions, will provide the Shanghai Harbor International Passenger Transportation Center with two Evergreen® 19XR centrifugal chillers, six 30HXC-HP1 river-water source heat pump chillers and Carrier control systems. Known as the Shanghai Water Gateway Landmark Project, the center is the key project of Huangpu riverside development, and will have total cooling capacity of 7,000 refrigeration tons (RT). Carrier is a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX).

Carrier made custom air-conditioning systems for this transportation center, a world-class building designed to achieve energy efficiency and sustainability.

Capitalizing on its Huangpu riverside location, Carrier’s 30HXC-HP1 river water source heat pump chillers utilize river water as the major heating and cooling source, replacing the traditional boiler and cooling tower and enhancing energy efficiency. Because temperatures can reach zero degrees Celsius in winter, Carrier’s specially designed chiller uses glycol as the heat exchange medium with the river water, which guarantees a supply of hot water (temperatures higher than 45 degrees Celsius). The two 19XR centrifugal chillers work as an additional cooling source to meet demands in summer.

A key part of its customized solutions, Carrier’s control systems monitor and analyze data and release preventive warnings to ensure its chillers operate smoothly. Chiller shift, loading and unloading could be operated automatically according to different load conditions to help enhance energy efficiency and prolong the chiller’s life-span.

Carrier will install products that use non-ozone depleting refrigerant HFC-134a, which contribute to the building’s "green" operation.

"Winning the Shanghai Harbor International Passenger Transportation Center project demonstrates Carrier’s ability to provide air-conditioning solutions that fulfill the unique demands of our customers," said Ross Shuster, president of Carrier Building Systems and Services Asia. "We are honored to contribute our leading technologies and products to another green and sustainable landmark building in Shanghai."

The Shanghai Harbor International Passenger Transportation Center covers approximately 400,000 square meters and represents a $270 million (USD) investment in its overall construction. The center includes an international passenger harbor, office building, hotel and other supporting facilities. The transportation center will have three berths of 80,000-tonnage level with annual berthing capacity of 500 ships and annual passenger volume of one million.
